It’s been a while since we’ve had a full-fledged Batman game for console. While the Arkham sub-series is continuing with Batman: Arkham Shadow, it sounds like we’ll continue waiting to get another mainline title starring the Dark Knight in our hands.
Puck News reported that a game set in the universe of Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe was in development as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s aim to establish a stronger games presence. Much like the upcoming Penguin show, this supposed project was “seeded” within the events of the 2022 film, though no further details (like a developer or platforms) were provided. But before folks could get too excited, James Gunn stepped in on Threads to say there was “no true to this whatsoever.” Darn.
Still, setting aside Gunn’s rumor–quashing word, a game centered on this specific Batman would be interesting, and a noted departure from the character’s MO in the medium in quite a while. Believe it or not, Batman’s last genuine tie-in game was for Batman: The Brave and the Bold all the way back in 2010. Beyond that, his various game franchises in the past 15 years, like the Arkham, Lego, and Telltale series, were all original stories that pulled from different parts of the character’s decades of available source material. And part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC game plan is for an interconnected multimedia universe that also includes games, and film and TV actors reprising their roles in that medium.
Games have been an area where DC has done generally well in the last few years, and with the right team, a game based on this specific Batman could be cool. But such a title was in the works, we’d have to know immediately if Robert Pattinson was getting in the booth to play his weird, angsty-ass iteration of Bruce Wayne.
